Cecilia Jonker says:
My name is Cecilia Jonker and I am from South Africa. I studied at the Design School Southern Africa and in 2011 obtained my BA degree in Fashion Design with distinction. After graduation, I gave extra one on one class and exam preparation classes to students struggling with lower and higher grade Mathematics and English. Apart from this I was also a volunteer at our local high school in my town where I helped students with dyslexia by reading their exam papers to them. My father is a retired school teacher and principal and thus he instilled in me that education is of utmost importance and that the minds of the young should be tended to with much care. I am a firm believer in the importance of education and the stimulation of the child’s mind. I believe that education has become a chore to some and that if we can instill the fun factor back into education, children would once again become eager to learn and broaden their horizons. I have always dreamt of travelling and broadening my horizons by experiencing different cultures. I would love to be able to educate and be educated. My goal is to create in the minds of children the urge to want to learn more. People are starting to stagnate in their ways and I believe that the new generation should be stimulated creatively and educationally in order to create a better tomorrow. With the digital revolution I feel that a common known language would benefit us all; thus it is important to teach young children English as a 2nd language and in the long run this will open up endless possibilities to them. Language acquisition is a very important component of a child’s education and it is something I am passionate about. It is important to ensure students of different abilities, levels and temperaments are catered for while ensuring that everyone receives enough attention and learns effectively. Utilizing my experience as an artist, I often create fun activities and games for the students as a way to keep things fresh and to compound their learning. My name is Michael Adrian Frye, and I was born in Chicago USA, and then moved to Vancouver Canada at age 14.Upon graduation from the University of British Columbia with a major in late imperial Chinese history, I moved to Taiwan to teach English in Nankan, Taoyuan. My teaching philosophy for kids is to create a fun and interactive environment that enables children to feel comfortable using English. I am an optimistic teacher that strongly believes in positive reinforcement to encourage children to feel confident about themselves in class. I believe students need to be independent and learn to manage their own responsibilities, and in class I strive to establish accountability with constant interactive feedback for both positive and negative behavior.

My name is Michael Pope. I am from New Brunswick, New Jersey. I have a degree in psychology from Rutgers University. I have been teaching English in Taiwan for over 4 years. I have taught kids with no previous English language experience and I have also taught middle school students in a range of subjects including: science, history, music and mathematics. Generally speaking, I believe that all children have an innate ability to absorb language. They have vivid imaginations and incredible potential. As a teacher, my job is to give them structure and guide them through the learning process. My goal is to create a safe learning environment that challenges students, and at the same time fosters their natural inclinations toward learning -- so that they can continue to be curious learners. This is a very important aspect of learning that will keep them interested in English for years to come.

My name is Vivian Liao and I am very happy to be a part of Columbia English and be your child’s English phonics teacher. I was born in Taiwan and moved to South Africa when I was two years old, and moved back to Taiwan to study International Business Management at Ming Chuan University. During university, I started working part time at language schools to help elementary students with their English. I realized that teaching is my passion and started pursuing teaching as a full time career.. My goal this semester is to create an environment in the classroom where students may feel comfortable enough to express themselves in English and not feel shy. A place where they are not forced to do anything but are encouraged to do so.
